Both Snapchat and Instagram have become favored social media sites for Millennials, the up-and-coming demographic many marketers are working to reach. After Facebook Messenger, these two social media sites are tied for the second-highest used messaging app for this demographic. Instagram and Snapchat also hold the 3rd and 4th spot for most time spent on a platform by Millennials. Both sites have similar features which make it a challenge to decide where to focus your social media marketing time and money.

Social Media Tips for Entrepreneurs

Here are some stats to consider:

  • Snapchat has 8+ billion video views per day
  • Instagram has 80 million photos shared per day
  • Instagram has 400 million monthly active users
  • Snapchat has over 100 million daily active users

These numbers are similar. Instagram is primarily focused on images although they have started getting more GIFs and short videos in their Instagram Moments program. Snapchat started with photos that could be marked up, but now has video and the ability to chat, and then move the chat to video chat if your friend is online.

If you compare the audience on both sites, you see that:

  • Snapchat’s users are 70% women and 71% under age 25
  • Instagram’s users are pretty equally divided between men and women and 53% under age 29 with an additional 25% age 30 to 49

If you are interested in engaging Millennials using social media marketing in Miami, Instagram offers a good way to post a story using photography or video and get responses through likes and comments. Previously, Snapchat did not have as useful of a system to track those types of metrics, but now they have introduced Snapchat Stories, a program that gives you the opportunity for feedback with the Story Reply feature. However, the ability to build momentum publicly on a topic is still better on Instagram which has public comments. In the end, it is up to you to decide how to better reach your audience.
